Dia duit!
If you’re dreaming of an epic Irish adventure filled with breathtaking cliffs, historic castles, and stunning hikes, then this road trip itinerary is perfect for you. From the lively streets of Dublin to the rugged landscapes of Donegal and the enchanting castles of Killarney, we planned the ultimate route for an unforgettable journey through Ireland. And I don’t want to toot my own horn here, but we heard from MULTIPLE locals that ours was the best Ireland itinerary they’d heard yet 😉
There IS one caveat… the only big thing we skipped is Waterford Crystal – so if that’s on your MUST SEE list… you’ll want to figure out a place to work it in.
Days 1-2: Discovering Dublin

Start your adventure in Dublin, a city bursting with history and charm.
Must-See Attractions:
- St. Patrick’s Cathedral – Marvel at this iconic landmark, one of Ireland’s most stunning cathedrals. You can book tickets ahead of time here.
- Dublin Castle – Dive into Irish history at this medieval stronghold. You can learn more about it and book tickets here.
- Viking Museum (Dublinia) – A fascinating look at Ireland’s Viking past. Try picking up the armor… I dare you. Tickets and more info here.
- Temple Bar – Experience Dublin’s famous pub culture with live music and great craic. This one’s definitely a tourist attraction – but you ARE a tourist so who cares. For a calendar of events and more info, click here.
- Kilmainham Goal – A trip through Ireland’s somewhat dark history. I highly suggest you book your tickets ahead of time here.
TIP:
Most of these attractions are part of the hop on/hop off tour. I would suggest you purchase a 2 day ticket for that in order to get around town and pick up a rental car on your way out of Dublin.
Day 3: Dublin to Belfast (via Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge)

Here’s where you’ll need a rental car. I suggest purchasing the extra insurance because many of the country roads in Ireland are surrounded by trees and tree tunnels… it’s worth the peace of mind not swerving for fear of scratching the car!
Hit the road and make your way north to Belfast, stopping along the way at the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, where you can test your nerves crossing this thrilling suspension bridge over the Atlantic. Not up for the bridge? No problem! This stop is worth it even just for the views – see these gorgeous Irish cliffs!
Belfast Highlights:
- Titanic Museum – Learn about the ship’s tragic history in its birthplace. Grab your tickets here.
- Black Cab Tour – A must-do experience exploring Belfast’s history and famous murals. Learn more about it here.
Overnight in Belfast.
Day 4: Belfast to Ballymoney

Take a scenic drive toward Ballymoney, a charming town near some of Northern Ireland’s most breathtaking sights.
Must-Visit:
- Dark Hedges – A mystical avenue of beech trees made famous by Game of Thrones. This place is a photographer’s dream. Check it out here.
- Glenveagh National Park – Perfect for a serene hike amidst stunning landscapes. You can look for hiking routes here. We parked far away and walked the lakeside walk up to Glenveagh Castle- – A fairytale-like castle in the heart of a national park. It’s well worth the visit!
Overnight in Ballymoney.
Day 5: Ballymoney to Letterkenny

Crossing into the Republic of Ireland, you’ll head toward Letterkenny, the gateway to Donegal.
Highlights Along the Way:
- Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) Cliffs – Europe’s highest sea cliffs, offering jaw-dropping views. Learn more about them here. For some reason many tourists opt to skip these GORGEOUS Irish cliffs in favor of the more popular Cliffs of Moher. We saw both – and I highly suggest you do too!
Overnight in Letterkenny. Do yourself a favor and order some fish and chips… I forget the name of the pub we went to, but it was the best I’ve ever had!
Day 6: Letterkenny to Donegal (Lough Eske Castle Stay)

Travel to Donegal and enjoy a luxurious night at Lough Eske Castle. This was hands down my favorite hotel we stayed at in Ireland. You can see why here. It’s truly a serene environment!
Even better – this stay is off-the-beaten-path and because the hotel sits on 900 acres of land – it provides the R&R needed to break up this 15-day Ireland road trip nicely. If you have a few extra days to spend – I’d suggest doing that here.
What to Do:
- Hike around Lough Eske – A peaceful and scenic retreat.
- Visit the Spa – For some R&R after all of the hiking and walking.
- Donegal Castle – One of Ireland’s finest castles.
Overnight at Lough Eske Castle.
Day 7: Donegal to Ashford Castle

Head south, stopping for a scenic hike along the way.
Hiking Highlight:
- Assaranca Waterfall – A hidden gem nestled in Donegal’s lush landscapes. Learn more here.
- Visit Ashford Castle – Explore one of Ireland’s most magnificent castles, now a world-famous hotel.
- Explore any of the walks near Ashford Castle.
Overnight at Ashford Castle – one of the best luxury resorts in Ireland!
Days 8-9: Killarney & The Ring of Kerry

Travel to Killarney, a picturesque town filled with natural beauty.
Must-Do:
- Ring of Kerry Drive – Experience Ireland’s most scenic road trip or take the bus tour so you can soak it all in.
- Killarney National Park – Spot deer and enjoy breathtaking trails.
- Muckross House & Abbey – Stunning historical sites in a serene setting. I suggest visiting the traditional farms for a glimpse back in history.
Stay two nights in Killarney.
Day 10: Kenmare

Make a quick stop in the charming town of Kenmare, known for its colorful streets and lively pubs.
What to Do:
- Hike around Gleninchaquin Park – A gorgeous hike with waterfalls and lakes.
- Explore Connemara National Park – A stunning landscape of mountains, bogs, and coastal views.
- Visit Kylemore Abbey – A breathtaking castle-like abbey set against the mountains.
- Overnight in Connemara.
Overnight in Kenmare.
Day 11: Blarney & Cork

Travel to Blarney and Cork, home to some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks.
Must-Visit:
- Blarney Castle & Stone – You COULD kiss the stone for the gift of eloquence… but rumor has it people get drunk and pee on it. 😂 You decide… More info here.
- Cliffs of Moher – Towering over the Atlantic, these cliffs offer one of Ireland’s most iconic views.
- The English Market (Cork) – A vibrant local market in the middle of a rather large city. Create your own meal here or simply visit for the experience of it.
- Jameson Midleton Distillery – If whiskey is your thing, you won’t want to skip out on this.
Overnight in Blarney.
Day 12: Kilkenny

Journey to Kilkenny, a medieval town full of charm.
Top Attractions:
- Kilkenny Castle – A beautifully preserved medieval fortress.
- Smithwick’s Brewery Tour – Sample Ireland’s famous red ale.
Overnight in Kilkenny.
Day 13: Back to Dublin (via a scenic stop)

Before heading back to Dublin, stop for a final night in a picturesque Irish countryside location.
Options:
- Rock of Cashel – An iconic historic site.
- Glendalough – A stunning monastic site in the Wicklow Mountains.
Overnight in a cozy countryside inn.
Days 14-15: Final Dublin Exploration & Departure

Spend your last two days soaking up any sights you missed.
Bonus Experiences:
- Best Afternoon Tea in Dublin – Treat yourself before heading home. I loved the afternoon tea at The Conrad Dublin.
- Grafton Street Shopping – Pick up Irish souvenirs.
- Trinity College Library & Book of Kells – Explore Ireland’s most famous library and its stunning illuminated manuscript.
Depart from Dublin with incredible memories of Ireland’s castles, cliffs, and scenic landscapes.
